What We Do

Therapeutic Supports

The foundation of Kirsten's therapeutic approach is safety. This means that whether we connect online or in-person she is keen for you to know that there is no-judgement when you are together, and you are safe to be whoever you are in the therapy room.

Therapeutic supports can take a number of forms, depending on what we're focusing on and how you feel in session. If we're online we can engage in traditional talk therapy, but there may be some days that you don't really want to talk, and that's ok too. On those days maybe we could play an online game or puzzle together, or doing some digital drawing or colouring. You can communicate in any way you feel comfortable.

If you're in-person at The Burrows, then we can hang out in the clinic and play with toys (yep - adults too!), do some drawing together, play with slime or playdoh, or pet one of the support dogs. We can also go for a walk down to the dam, and burn off some nervous energy. Alternatively, we can visit the chickens and ducks, and spend our time together supported by the flock.

Kirsten uses evidence based practice in her work, taking a trauma-informed, holistic approach informed by Narrative therapy, Play Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (adjusted). She is able to support with:

  • 2e & Giftedness

  • Anxiety

  • Attention differences (ADHD)

  • Autism (including PDA profiles)

  • Eating differences

  • Food-related challenges (and binge eating)

  • Identity exploration (including neurotype, sexuality,  gender and marginalised identities)

  • Obsessions and Compulsions

  • PTSD & Trauma

  • Purging behaviours

  • Relationship challenges

  • Restrictive eating (ARFID, Anorexia)

  • Transitions & Life Changes

  • Weight stigma/fat-phobia

  • Workplace difficulties

Group therapy will be offered later in 2025, with a focus on connection and support for neurodivergent adults. We also hope to offer nature-based group therapy for young people in summer 2025.

Neurodevelopmental Assessment
(Including Autism & ADHD)

IMG_2962.HEIC

Kirsten offers Neurodevelopmental Assessments to Adults and Children (ages 3 - 17) using a neuroaffirming approach. This means that she approaches assessment as an exploration of your beautiful brain, seeking to understand your unique neurotype, and the strengths you already possess! Assessments consider autism, ADHD, OCD, learning differences (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia), to name a few! For parents, we'll support you to understand your young person and how to cultivate a safe, secure and affirming relationship with them.

The tools used in our assessments may include:

  • MIGDAS-2 Interview

  • Cognitive Testing (WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, WIAT-III, WAIS-IV)

  • Comprehensive Autistic Traits Inventory Questionnaire

  • DIVA-5 or Young-DIVA-5

  • Conners Rating Scales for ADHD

  • Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale

Currently, Adult Assessments can be undertaken on either telehealth (via Microsoft Teams) or in-person. Assessments for under 18s will generally be undertaken in person. However, please feel free to discuss this with our team if this will be challenging for you.

See our Fees & Rebates page for further information on Assessment options, and how we might be able to support you, or your young person to understand your beautiful, unique neurotype!

Coaching & Mentoring

At The Burrows we believe strongly that different brain types are not disordered, but a unique way of experiencing the world. For some people, this might mean that you don't feel the need to speak with a Psychologist or Counsellor. In these instances, sometimes a neuroaffirming coach or mentor can help you work towards your goals, and support you find the path to the life you want to lead.

Tony has worked as a coach and people manager for over 25 years, and cares deeply about supporting others to achieve their fullest potential. Some of the situations he can offer mentoring and coaching around include:

  • Identification of your strengths, skills and knowledge - and how to use them!

  • Build communication and self-advocacy skills

  • Strategies to navigate the work environment

  • Helping you 'hack' your brain to work more effectively and efficiently

  • Empower you to build self-efficacy and self-esteem.

Mentoring and Coaching sessions are currently offered via telehealth (using Microsoft Teams) for the purposes of accessibility. However, if you would like to attend a session in person, please let our admin team know and we will provide some options to you.

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, diverse perspectives are essential for success. However, many organisations struggle to create truly inclusive environments where all employee feel valued and empowered.

This, not only, leads to decreased productivity and employee engagement but also hinders innovation and limits growth potential.

Similar can be said of the customer experience, where organisations often fail to provide a truly inclusive customer experience. This can lead to missed revenue, diminished customer loyalty and poor growth in the customer base.

Our Consultancy services are designed to be tailored to your business goals and objectives. We will work with you to create a bespoke service to meet your needs, which may include:

  • Executive level training and strategic planning to leverage  neurodivergent employee strengths

  • Customer-focused Neurodiversity health check

  • Presentations at a whole-of-organisation level

  • Input and feedback on Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, policy & procedures

  • Design and delivery of neurodiversity-informed recruitment and people-management policies and training

We're keen to work with you to elevate your business performance by creating inclusive and safe workplaces for neurodivergent employees and customers.

We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded, and support the work to decolonise psychology, mental health and assessment services.
